Zelensky explained that under Ukrainian law, elections are suspended during wartime. Trump’s immediate response was striking:
“So, you’re saying if we’re at war with someone, there are no elections? Oh, that’s good.”
Though delivered with a sarcastic tone, the comment quickly spread across U.S. media and social networks, sparking fears that Trump could apply the same logic to delay or even cancel U.S. elections under certain conditions.

Several prominent Democratic governors have gone on record with serious warnings about Trump’s intentions. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker suggested that Trump could seize on claims of election irregularities to justify military intervention.
“He will simply assert there’s some problem with the election, and then put soldiers on the ground to seize control—if he’s allowed to do this,” Pritzker told CBS’s Face the Nation.
Pritzker went further, drawing historical parallels to Adolf Hitler’s rapid consolidation of power in Germany.
“Hitler needed only 53 days to turn Germany into a dictatorship. Trump is following the same playbook: undermine the media, create chaos, and use that chaos as a pretext for intervention,” he warned.
California Governor Gavin Newsom echoed similar fears, arguing that Trump has no real intention of allowing another election to take place.
“I don’t think Donald Trump wants another election. Do people really believe this man is serious about democracy? Wake up—you’re going to lose your country,” Newsom said.
Broader Context: Guard Deployments Raise Questions
The deployment of National Guard troops in cities such as Chicago and Los Angeles has been a flashpoint in the debate. While Trump insists the moves are meant to restore law and order amid rising crime rates, critics view them as a rehearsal for election-related crackdowns.
Civil rights groups say this could be part of a larger plan to stifle dissent and scare voters. The ACLU and a number of other watchdog groups have already sued to stop these deployments, saying they go beyond state authorities.
Trump’s Position on 2028 Remains Uncertain

These patterns have made people even more worried that the upcoming elections won’t really show what the people want, but will instead be affected by efforts to manipulate the system for political advantage.
Republican leaders dismiss these concerns as nothing more than partisan exaggeration. Yet, the reality is that the stakes remain extremely high. The path Donald Trump chooses—whether to uphold the principles of the U.S. Constitution or attempt to bend them—could shape the very foundation of free and fair elections in the country.
